Under the requirements set out by the Portugal Nationality Act (Act number 37/81 of 3 October) after 5 years, golden visa holders can naturalize for Portugal passport and citizenship if below conditions are met.
Naturalisation Conditions
- Portuguese nationality under these conditions if:
- is over 18 years old (or emancipated according to Portuguese law)
- has been legally residing in Portugal for at least 5 years.
- He has sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language.
Ineligible
to have been convicted and sentenced to a prison term of 3 years or more for a crime that is punishable in Portugal.
to be involved in activities related to terrorism.
Portuguese Language
- a certificate of qualification from a Portuguese public, private or cooperative educational establishment.
- a certificate of approval in a Portuguese language test
- A certificate of Portuguese as a foreign language, obtained by taking a test at a Portuguese assessment center recognized by the Ministry of Education, through the Center for Assessment of Portuguese as a Foreign Language.
- You do not need to present documents to prove your knowledge of Portuguese if you were born in a Portuguese-speaking country and have nationality from that country.
If the person applying for citizenship cannot read or write, the Portuguese language proficiency test must be adapted to their ability to demonstrate their knowledge of the language.
