The Portugal GV Application process starts with applying for Tax and social security number in Portugal. The whole process takes anywhere from 12-18 months depending how fast you prepare documents and AIMA timeline.

Basic Eligibility

Before applying you must meet basic requirements:

  • Be 18+ and non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.
  • Have a clean criminal record.
  • Be willing to make a qualifying economic investment in Portugal.
  • Spend a minimum stay in Portugal (such as 7 days total in the first year and 14 days in subsequent periods under current rules).

Step-by-Step Application Process:

  1. Work with a Lawyer – Hire a lawyer in Portugal to seek legal advice. We highly recommend this although it is not required. We can provide one if you want free of charge.
  2. Pick Investment Option: Choose a qualifying investment, commonly a €500,000 subscription in Portuguese venture capital/investment funds, or a €250,000 donation to cultural heritage.
  3. Open Bank Account: Secure a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF) and Social security number(NISS)
  4. Open a local bank account in Portugal, which can often be done remotely through a legal representative or proxy. Provide required documents. This step is optional.
  5. Background checks – You will undergo background checks by the law firm and review.
  6. Pay the Investment: Transfer the required funds to your Portuguese account and finalize the investment, ensuring you have documentation to prove the legal origin of funds.
  7. Document Gathering: Collect necessary documents, including a valid passport, clean criminal record certificate (from your home country, notarized and apostilled), health insurance, and completed application forms.
  8. AIMA Application : Submit your application through the AIMA (Agência para a Imigração e Mobilidade) portal. This will be done by the lawyer
  9. Biometric Appointment: Schedule and attend an in-person appointment in Portugal to submit biometric data (fingerprints and photo).
  10. Receive Approval & Cards: Upon approval, pay the processing fee (approx. €5,325 per person) to receive your two-year residency card, which allows for visa-free travel in the Schengen Area, live work or study in Portugal.
  11. File your permanent residency or citizenship application after 5 years (must meet 14 days per 2 year requirement.) You must also pass A2 level language test.
