Portugal’s immigration authority AIMA has answered and clarified important questions asked by holders of residence permit.

Can I travel outside of Portugal with my expired Residence Permit, under the Decree-Law that extends the validity of documents until 06/2025?

Documents and visas relating to stay in Portugal, whose validity expired on
or after February 22, 2020, are valid until June 30, 2025. These documents
are accepted by Portuguese entities, under the terms of article 16, paragraphs 1
to 8, of Decree-Law no. 10-A/2020, of March 13, as amended by Decree-Law no.
41-A/2024, of June 28, such as the Institute of Employment and Professional
Training, Tax Authority, Social Security, National Health Service, Municipal
Councils, Parish Councils, Banks and Employers.

The extension of the validity of these documents and visas is limited to
Portugal and is binding to the Portuguese authorities, with entry and movement
in other Schengen Area complying with the Schengen Borders Code.

Can I travel outside Portugal with just the receipt proving the application for a residence permit?

No. The receipt proving the application for a residence permit is not a travel
document. Therefore, it cannot be used to travel to other Schengen Areas.
If you want to leave Portugal, you must have a valid travel document and must
comply with the rules in force in the country you are traveling to.

How can I renew my Residence Permit?

Applications for renewal of temporary and permanent Residence Permits must
be submitted in person at an IRN counter, by appointment. AIMA is only responsible for receiving requests for renewal of Residence Permits for Investment Activities and for Victims of Human Trafficking or Assistance for Illegal Immigration.

I lost my Residence Permit. What can I do?

You must request a 2nd copy of your Residence Permit in case of loss or
misplacement, destruction, theft or robbery, accompanied by the theft/loss
declaration presented to the security entities, by making an appointment. The
appointment could be done through the AIMA Contact Center on (+351) 217 115
000 (which is available every working day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm) or by email
address geral@aima.gov.pt.

Once the permit is return, will in-person collection of the Residence
Permit at an AIMA Center cost me any fee?

Under the terms of Ordinance No. 307/2023, of October 13, fees are due for the
in-person delivery of the Residence Permit in the amount of 28.50 euros.

How can I change the data on my Residence Permit?

To change the Residence Permit’s data you must make an appointment to the
AIMA Contact Center, calling (+351) 217 115 000, which is available every
working day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, or via email to geral@aima.gov.pt.

Can I request a certificate of residence time at any AIMA Center?

Yes. Any AIMA Center can issue a time counting certificate, for nationality and
other purposes, and the request should preferably be delivered to the AIMA
Center closest to your residence. To this end, you should consult the AIMA website (www.aima.gov.pt), check the available times and fill out the form available at the following link:
