Citizens from CPLP nations (Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé & Príncipe, Timor-Leste) can enter Portugal with a visa with expedited path to Portuguese nationality. Some waivers are given specified below.

Visa Required

The Law on Foreigners is amended with regard to citizens from the CPLP entering, family reunification, and job-seekers visas. Under the new visa regime approved in 2025, The CPLP residence permit request is limited to those who have a residence visa and it is no longer possible to request it on national soil with a tourism visa or visa waiver. Therefore CPLP citizens must secure a proper consular visa, such as a work or study visa, from a Portuguese consulate in their home country before traveling to Portugal.

As per the new Law no. 9/2025 of 13 February allows the CPLP Residence Permit to have the same validity as residence permits granted to nationals of other countries.

Extended Rights

  • Free movement– Allowed within CPLP countries and also within Schengen area (new immigration rules)
  • Simplified documentation – Simplified for CPLP visa applications, e.g., no proof of subsistence if hosted by a resident.
  • Fast Track citizenship – The path to Portuguese citizenship for CPLP nationals now requires 3 years of legal residence, up from previous rules.
  • No Minimum Salary enforced: A genuine job contract is enough to secure a work residence permit
  • Family reunification – Spouses and minor children (conditions apply)
  • AIMA processing – A dedicated online portals and priority channels provided to CPLP nationals.
  • Society – Integration to Portuguese society allowing them to work, study, and access health services and other social rights.
